Airport

Istanbul Airport (IST): IST offers excellent connections to the city and beyond. You can easily access Istanbul by train, bus, or taxi from the airport. The new Istanbul Airport is well-integrated into the city’s transportation network.

The airport is connected to the city center by the M11 metro line, which provides a direct route from the airport to central Istanbul. The journey takes approximately 40 minutes. In addition to the metro, there are numerous bus services and taxis available, making travel to various parts of the city straightforward.

Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW): SAW also serves Istanbul, with flights to many European and international destinations. It offers frequent connections to cities such as London, Paris, and Berlin. The airport is located on the Asian side of Istanbul, and you can reach the city center in about an hour by taxi or airport shuttle bus

Time zone

Istanbul operates on Türkiye Time (TRT), which is 3 hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC+3).

Currency

Türkiye uses the Turkish Lira (TRY) as its official currency. Currency exchange services are available at the airports, banks, and exchange bureaus throughout the city.

Health and Medical Services

Language

Between Istanbul Airport (IST) and the City Center

  • From IST to the city center: The M11 metro line connects the airport directly to central Istanbul, with trains running every few minutes. The journey to key areas like Taksim or Sultanahmet takes approximately 40 minutes.
  • From the City Center to IST: The M11 metro line provides a direct route from central locations to Istanbul Airport. The first metro train departs at around 6:00 am, and services run frequently throughout the day. The trip from Taksim or Sultanahmet to the airport takes about 40 minutes.

Between Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) and the City Center

  • From SAW to the City Center: The airport is connected to central Istanbul by the E-10 and E-11 buses, which operate frequently. The journey to Taksim takes around 60 to 90 minutes, depending on traffic. The airport also offers shuttle services that can provide a more direct route to various parts of the city.
  • From the City Center to SAW:The E-10 and E-11 buses are available from major hubs in the city center. The first buses start early in the morning and operate frequently. The journey to the airport generally takes between 60 to 90 minutes. Shuttle services are also available for a quicker and more comfortable transfer.

Car

Istanbul Airport (IST): The journey from IST to the city center takes approximately 40 to 60 minutes. The distance between IST and central areas like Taksim or Sultanahmet is about 40 km, with most of the trip via the main highway (via TEM or E5).

Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW): SAW is 40 km to Kadıköy, 12 km to downtown Pendik, and 50 km to Taksim. Via a 1.5 km link to TEM highway, it offers exceptionally relaxed traffic. For detailed information, please visit: Accessing SAW

Public transportation Istanbul

Istanbul’s public transport network is extensive and efficient, operated by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. More information: Visit Istanbul Official

  • Metro: The Istanbul Metro system is operated by Metro Istanbul. There are 6 Istanbul Metro lines, with four (M1, M2, M3 and M6) on the European side of the city and two (M4 and M5) on the Asian side.
  • Bus: Search for a route or station at IETT. For those buses of the Municipality: white-red colored ones are older, green colored ones are more modern, and purple-colored ones are the eco-friendly buses. The blue ones are half privatized, but fully integrated into the public system and with the same fares.
  • Funicular: The underground funicular includes F1 and F2.  F1 connects the Kabataş hub directly to Takism Square in less than 2 minutes; F2 is convenient for quickly reaching Istiklal when around the Galata Bridge area.
